How to Write a Testimonial That Will Get You Noticed

Testimonials are welcome social proof for people who are marketing a product(s) on the Internet.  As a product creator, you want testimonials on your sales page to show potential buyers that sitting on the fence is not necessary – others have bought the product and been more than satisfied with it.

While you understand that testimonials benefit the product creator, did you realize that giving testimonials can also be a big plus for the testimonial giver?  Let’s look at why you want to give a testimonial and how to give a good one.

Why give a testimonial –

  • One obvious reason is to get noticed.  You might be an unknown in your niche right now, but it’s never too early to start building your brand.  If you write a respectable testimonial and include your picture, people will read the testimonial or at least look at the picture, right? Then the next time they see your name or picture, whether it be in a forum, another product testimonial, or your own website, they are going to remember they’ve seen you around here before.  Giving testimonials is one way of creating recognition.

  • Another big reason is to get people to click on your link in your testimonial signature.  Ideally, you want people to read your great testimonial, click on your link, join your list and ultimately buy from you. If your testimonial is on a sales page that is going to be read by lots and lots of people, you have a better chance of many people visiting your site.

If your testimonial is dishonest, is over-hyped, you sound like a newbie who doesn’t know anything, or you’re giving a testimonial for a product that stinks, you are harming your reputation.  People won’t believe you and certainly won’t click on the link to your site.

The elements of a good testimonial –

Explain how you’ve used the product and what results you have had. People will zero in on any before and after money figures you give.  They are impressed with you when you explain how you went from making $655/month to $2962/month because of this product.

Share your story, briefly, so people want to click through to your site to find out more about you.  “I was laid off 22 months ago, right after I found out we were expecting our first child. I nervously decided to give internet marketing a try and seriously wondered if I’d lost my marbles the first few months. Then I discovered product xyz and here’s what happened…”

Don’t go over the top gushing about the product, even if you are excited about it.  If you go overboard and make hard-to-believe claims, you’re hurting your credibility and your testimonial will end up in the marketer’s trash can.  Also, be sure to check your grammar and spelling, especially if part of your brand is in the writing field.

Keep it honest.  If you say in your testimonial that the product helped you beautify your blog, people will click through to your blog to see if it is beautiful.  People will know right then and there if you’re telling the truth or you’re BSing.

Your testimonial should not sound like you’re a helpless, needy newbie.  You can be new but professional.  “Thanks for putting the last piece of the puzzle in place. Your experience and knowledge has helped me implement a plan to double my income by the end of the year.”

Giving a good testimonial can lead to more than selling your own products or building your list, although those are nice.  The testimonial can take on a life of its own because the marketer is going to leverage it.  It may end up on other sales pages, inside new products, and in emails to their lists.  A good testimonial can open doors – chances to build relationships with other marketers and even joint venture opportunities.
